Anyone used Cold Fill only washers?

My daughter needed a new washer urgently.
Found what we thought was a bargain at Makro ~ £129.99 + vat until we opened it, and found it to be cold fill only. I am hoping that it isn't going to cost her a fortune in electric ~ how good is the cold wash and has anyone used it much.
I am hoping that if she can use the cold wash only a lot, it might be ok.

  • Most new machines are cold feed only. Even when using the hot feed, for most of the supply it would be cold water coming out anyway as it takes time for the water to get hot through the pipes.

Your likely to find that the washingmachine is more efficient than the boiler anhyway.

Mine is a cold fill only - just as good results as the last one and haven't noticed the electricity bill jumping up since we got it ( last one was a hot and cold fill machine ).

My washing machine is American, and doesn't have a heater, and we only have a cold fill to it. It washes really well. Find washing tablets don't work very well as often don't disolve in cold water. Liquid much better

Our dog kennels has cold fill only washing machine, to be honest all the cycles that bring the bedding up clean last for ages!! Around 1.45hrs! And it works out about £1.40 a cycle! We've just changed our eleccy tariff as we weren't on the best but our household machine with both fill is far better.

I had my washing machine and tumble dryer at the same time before Christmas and I didn't notice an increase in my electrical spend at all. In fact it stayed about the same (it probably had something to do with the fact that my old washing machine took nearly 2 hours to do a 'quick' wash)

I felt really guilty getting the washer, and not taking notice of the pipes at the back. Never thought to ask the question, or check it was h & c fill ~ just took it for granted really. Chances are that she will rarely use the very hot washes, just her and 9 year old daughter ~ so maybe mistake wasn't too bad after all.
I have just remembered using a cold fill top loader washer on holiday in America years ago ~ Went to it about 15/20 mins ~ it wasn't working, so thought I hadn't turned it on, looked again, and it had actually done the washing. That was in the days when it took hours for my home washer to do a quick wash.
  • We bought a new WM about 4 months ago and is a cold fill only. They are more economical to run but do seem to take longer for a wash. An average 30c take 1 hr 15mins, but it is a large 7.5kg machine. Its pretty good though and has cut my loads by about 25%.

I have a cold feed only DW and bought it because it is supposedly the more economical option. I love it but cannot comment on whether or not it has saved me money in the long run as I only got it last week. The idiots who delivered it though did not read the instructions properly and fitted it to the hot pipe... luckily OH fixed it and I got my delivery and fiting refunded.

  • I suspect that if you wash at the lower temperatures as recommended these days, it will be more cost effective.

It doesn't make much sense to have hot and cold fill if the common wash temperature means the machine needs to take both hot and cold in to lower the temperature (that made sense in my head... does everyone know what I mean  ). Basically, you would be using water heated by the boiler and cooling it down to be low enough.

Do you know what the energy rating was on the machine? That should give you an idea.
