.... but at least this thread has a certain level of sanity ... an example of a lost plot is that elsewhere there's someone with oil heating who claims to be spending ~£2k/year on electricity on not much more than TV, kettle & microwave and the answer from an energy company official rep comes back talking about 'Warm Home Discount' .... (????) ... :wall:

Bad day compared with others, 2.1 Os.
I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".

3.51 O's (13.94 kWh) After the frost had melted off the panels. My graph looks more like the bottom of a Limestone cave with Staligmites.

  • Hi all
This is my first post as i've previously just been dipping in and out of my areas of interest! (green issues, utilities, shopping!)
I've been paging through the forums but can't easily find what I want which is a comparison of the various options for using up spare PV generated energy. I have been recommended the iBoost by a family member but since trawling the forums the last few days have also seen mentions of SolarImmersion and immerSun.
I'm sure you long term forumites have done lots of comparisons before you purchased whatever you are using - is one better than the other? Do they all do basically the same thing? There is a price difference of about £130 so it would be great to know if it's worth paying more for one? There maybe other makes I haven't spotted?
Does it also depend on your PV system size (ours is only 2kW) and your immersion (old style lagged copper tank, heated by gas boiler), in terms of fitting the new device?
    Any advice much appreciated! Thanks

    Reasonsible day here today = 3.75 O's:)

Only need 20 kWh to hit March PVGIS......a day:eek:

Cannot believe that I need 102.37 kWh to reach my PVGIS

As at today I am 30 kWh down for the month but since the begining of Jun 2014 I am still net 83 kWh Up on my PVGIS so I cannot complain! Although I would always want more Sun as would we all.

I have the Immersun and am pleased with it. I don't know anything about the others but in essence they are just a clever switch which is interposed into the circuit between consumer unit and immersion. They then measure what is being generated and used and put the rest into to immersion. Not quite that simple in electronics terms but that is the principle.

One thing the immersun can do which I don't think all, if any, of the others can is to feed up to 3 outputs. One for the immersion (usually) and the others for, say, a radiator. They just have to be resistive loads, so not a TV or whatever.

I have a couple of oil-filled rads attached. Once the immersion is hot the first rad turns on; when that reaches full temp the other rad turns on. The immersion checks in every 15 mins to say whether it is "hungry" again, and so on. You can also set the division between outputs to "equal" and they then get a set time each. Max load at any time is 3kW but you can plug several devices into one output as long as total load is not exceeded.

The sensor can be wired or wireless and you can cascade up to 4 more immersuns as slaves if your system can deliver up to 15kW. they can each have 3 devices of course.

They are soon to bring out a web-based monitoring system which will record import, export, use and diverted which sounds a bit like other systems doing that but might make the maths look better. It will cost about £100. Also, looking on the immersun site thet have just reduced the price - go take a look.

    hope this helps...

    3.44 O's for me...bad, bad and very bad...
2.5 kWp PV system, SSW facing, 45 Deg Roof. ABB Inverter, Monitor: 'Wattson'.
Reg. for FIT Nov 2011. "It's not what you generate; it's how you use it that matters". One very clean Vauxhall Diesel Sri, £30.00 Road Tax: B)

Definition of 'O's = kWh/kWp (kWh = your daily & accurate Generation figure) (kWp = the rated output of your PV Panels).
  • After a couple of boring two and a half O days, today was better. It didn't look better, and it was perishingly cold, but somehow Rufus the Roof put on 4.5 Os. Clever old roof!

I seem to have missed a lot of excitement about the format of the forum, so perhaps it's just as well the weather was dullish earlier in the week. The Weatherwench says that's it for the week. Will it never be Spring?

I've just done the same thing - i decided on the iboost, installed yesterday and hot water in an hour was fantastic (obviously it was sunny)

    Very happy
