Install a multifuel stove to supply hot water and radiators in the winter. Then get them to remove the gas meter as we did. The gas supply pipes are still at our property should we need gas again in the future. Will just need them to bring the meter back!!! About the only way to stop paying the standing charge me thinks.

    Anyone else got any ideas????

.... get the usage down as low as possible then look to move to an energy supplier with a zero rate standing charge. Of course, you'll pay more for the units you actually use, but if you're a low user that'll only offset part of the saving .....

Probably not for me, but a relative is looking to buy a converted Blacksmiths Forge,

built around 200 years ago, with no gas supply, using oil.

Never had any dealings with oil, but understand it to be very expensive.

Is installing a multifuel stove pricey, and what are the running costs?:D

Interested to know what others think;)

    Hi

A decent spec log burner should be efficient enough to deliver around 4kWh.t per kg of well seasoned logs. As long as you take decent size loads (aim at ~3 cubic metres when stacked) you should be able to run the burner for less than the cost of mains gas ... for us it's well below, but we're pretty rural and use a sawmill working on estate land timber a couple of miles away as our main supplier.

Good stoves are pricey .... unlike many things these days, it's best to pay a little more and go for a decent make. Ours cost a lot ~20 years ago, but they still make the same model and spare parts are available (not that we've needed any ...) .... for installation, the chimney will need lining and the installation to be done professionally in order to comply with legislation, so that'll be at least the best part of £1k added to the burner to budget for ...

We looked at this option last year, and I agree with what you say; other costs are storage of logs, linking in the burner to the H/W supply, and I think that the payback time worked out to be around 30 years....nice, if your still around or haven't sold your house.

And what about the rest... i.e. midday 2.00 kW being used and only 370 W being generated...? You had a very baaaaad day, I watched it live while in the pouring rain in London. Looking at my Wattson site, I was very happy......cheers-smiley-emoticon.gif A/An Hawaii + 0.84 O's Graph available at:- http://wattson.energyhive.com/dashboard/oscarsenergy ( make sure you look at 10/07/14....:D) t2774.gifcoffee.gif
