We may have had sun today based on two spikes but I never noticed it!

Just looked at the time, was 30 miles away in the vale of York. Weather there most days is totally different from us.

2.5 kWp PV system, SSW facing, 45 Deg Roof. ABB Inverter, Monitor: 'Wattson'.
Reg. for FIT Nov 2011. "It's not what you generate; it's how you use it that matters". One very clean Vauxhall Diesel Sri, £30.00 Road Tax: B)

Definition of 'O's = kWh/kWp (kWh = your daily & accurate Generation figure) (kWp = the rated output of your PV Panels).
  • Hi - I have been approached by a company selling a product called a solar angel - I have a 4kw system on our roof on the first FIT tariff. We have a 3KW invertor and system is performing very well. They have said they replace the 'kill switch' with the solar angel it will produce 20% more power due to taking off the cap on the invertor. I am highly sceptical - cost is £1500. How on earth could replacing a switch with some sort of hocus pokus give us 20% more without replacing anything in the invertor ?

Hi. You say your system is performing well, and it probably is as you wouldn't see a huge amount of capping, and you'll get a slightly better performance at low generation.

Compare your annual generation to PVGIS (leave all the defaults, just pin your house, and enter the roof orientation and pitch and 4kWp).

If you are at all concerned then you could simply replace your inverter with a 3.68kW capped model. You wouldn't need any permission to do this as 3.68kW potential is approved by all UK DNO's (District Network Operators).

There have been other discussions on the G&E board about systems with relatively small inverters, and I seem to recall that generation was pretty good.

    Mart.
Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.

Take a look at this thread.

Sounds like the same sort of thing.

I would go with what Mart said and change your invertor if needed.

The company that gave me the info came back to me a couple of months ago saying that they have sold loads of them.

I said if you can show me 2 properties next to one another with one fitted and show me before and after figures for both then I would buy it if you could show me the 20% improvement.

Still waiting and I think I will be for sometime.
