Thanks for the extra info. I agree with Paul. Probably already statute barred but if you follow the advice above you can safely assert that in a few months.

Sorry to barge in on this post but I could see where to start a new one:o
Ive had a letter from ruthebridge the usual vague one about contacting them to discuss a matter, and If i didnt in so mnay days someone would call me. Ive had them phone my mobile a few times and had a robit voice on the messages asking the same thing, plus text messages. I screen my calls so dont answer calls I dont know or who are blocked.
I sent a letter back basically saying that as they hadnt told me what it was about I wouldnt be contacting them and if they wanted to speak with me to do so via letter etc etc which I think I found on this site
Anyway I get a letter back today saying they wont discuss it until I have called them to verify my name and address and some other details due to data protection. Well its pretty obvious they have my address and name, so shall I just ignore this one?Cheers guys x

It's obvious from that they are not even sure they are sending the letters to the correct person.
Unless or until they bother writing to explain exactly what it is about, if it was me then I would ignore.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Sorry to jump in with this but this morning I received a letter from Ruthbridge in my husbands name saying that hes failed to respond to mail directed to him (we havent had any mail) it goes on to say that you have been traced as living at the address stated above please contact us immediately on xxx. As the only debt we have on is our mortgage I rang this company and gave them the reference on the letter and I asked why they had my husbands name, they asked me to confirm my husbands date of birth which I did and they said they were trying to trace a person with this name but as the date of birth youve given me doesnt correspond with what they hold then they would remove his name from there list and we wouldnt be contacted again, I asked them if its about debt that they wanted him for then we only have our mortgage (forgot about the new 3 piece that we got on finance on xmas day) and that I didnt want my house black listed when this clearly isnt our debt, again I was advised they would remove my husbands name off there list, if i receive anymore letters do I just ignore them, this is so worrying that they can just pick names and try chasing the wrong people for debt, any advice would be kindly appreciated0

Ignore them completely, just because a company send you a debt letter does not mean they have any more legal power than you or I have, they have no power, you do not have to speak to them, you can ignore them completely, there is nothing they can do !!! they are fishing for the person who does own the debt, its common practice among DCA`s to operate in this way, they have confirmed its not his debt so that's it, forget about it, any more letters bin them, or complain to the financial ombudsman, that will cost them there £500 referral fee just to deal with the complaint, it will cost you nothing, and may give you a little satisfaction.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Hi, I have recently received 2 letter from Ruthridge one saying I owe £2k the other saying that I will get a 50% discount if I pay before 24/1. I have checked my credit history and there is no record of the debt so I do not know why I have received these letters. What is the best course of action? Any pointers?
Thanks0 -
Is it yours? If it was then it may be statute barred.
Either ignore or if you feel compelled to reply then it would initially be with something like this ---> Letter when you know nothing about about the debt - AKA "Prove it" letterFree/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Thanks for your response. It is not a debt I recognise I have been with my current bank for 19 years and have not had a loan with the bank mentioned in the letter. I have a current loan and loans in the past but these have always been settled and with no late payments.
I will send the letter you recommend and see what I get back as I do not want this to affect my credit rating.
Thank you0
