I work at Sainsbury's. It's a big store near a few motorways. All the staff know I do photography, I did the talent night they hold every year. Want some extra spending money £50 a month would be fine. Thing is they know I do photography but they never ask me to do any work.

Get a free website (Flickr?) and put a massive gallery on it, then get some cheapy business cards from Vistaprint and get them handed out?

Not wanting to be harsh but are you a photographer or a person with a camera? If you go to the modelling forums on other sites you will find hundreds of people who have expensive cameras, in many cases also studio lights as well, but are certainly not photographers.
You need a portfolio, ideally both internet and physical, and you need to drive awareness of it and that you are available for hire.0 -
An alternative is to go to amateur track days & take photos. A few if the people will ask to get copies of any pictures you take or a CD of 15 pictures can go for around £30.Truth always poses doubts & questions.
