Personal Data Held On Employees

Hi,

Quick question really.

If you have given your personal email address to your line manager for the same reasons as your telephone numbers, if they share that with other employees whether for work reasons (not official situations like hr) or for them to make personal contact, isn't that a breach of the personal data policy in the data protection act?

Thanks in advance.

Whats the employers policy on handling personal data? Who gets access - anyone who asks for it? Who and how is the data controlled?

Personal data shall be obtained only for one or more specified and lawful purposes, and shall not be further processed in any manner incompatible with that purpose or those purposes; you could have a "case" based on this principle if you were specifically told it was for emergencies etc

Its held either in employee folders by line managers or electronically in the case of anything hr, payroll, health, etc. Any updates to electronically held data is made via online forms vua the company intranet or by email. Managers would take it verbally or via email but should keep it locked away and not left on display.

So to me, by giving my email address vua an email in the context of employer to line manager it should be classes as contact data and not given out to colleagues. In this case it has been given out without my knowledge for non work related purposes.

I will be complaining about it but want to remind them of the law.
