I tried this for the first time last week after a friend at work said she had always done this as she shops once a month. I chopped and froze in freezer bags and used broccoli, cvauli and carrots this week cooked from frozen causing no issues. I am now going to pick up all the reduced prepped veg I can find, yesterday was diced turnip for 22p a bag!!

  • does anyone do this with the bags of chopped carrots (the ones i'v seen have it printed on the bag "not suitable for freezing" and i wondered why?)

To be honest, I don't know. I always ignore it and freeze them anyway. Never had any problems.

I've never froze onions, but can only think of them going abit mushy, not sure if this would matter though if you are going to cook with them. Just no good for sandwiches.

I chopped and froze some onions recently and the next day I found that when I opened the freezer it really stank of onion. This is despite me freezing them in a closed plastic box which was then wrapped in 2 freezer bags. I didn't blanche the onions beforehand - just froze them raw once peeled and chopped.

Has anyone else had this problem?

No, as I always freeze left over slices of onion in a ziplock bag. Can't say I've ever noticed a particularly strong smell?
I use these odd slices if anyone wants fried onion or shove them in the slow cooker as part of a stew.

We always have the stinky freezer problem with onions, no matter how many bags/boxes they go in - have known the smell to taint the ice cream in there, onion and vanilla was not so good.

Might have a go at blanching them before freezing to see if it does help. Have stopped pre preparing them for now because of the smell.
  • Hi,

I chop up carrot, onion, turnip/swede, and put a good handful of all three into one bag and freeze, don't bother to blanche. I usually make up about six bags at a time, and use one as a base for any soup I am making, adding other veg as required, depending on type of soup.
Another question, sorry, Do I have to defrost before cooking,or just add to recipe, steamer etc whilst still frozen?. I really haven't used any type of frozen veg much at all.

I use from frozen, as tried defrosting first and the veg seemed rubbery, when cooked.

The only ones i've tried freezing so far are carrots, and that is without blanching. I find that when you cook them from the freezer, that they are soft after cooking and when you put a fork in, you can the water coming out of them. That is even when they are cooked for half the time. I'll try blanching them next, see if there is a difference.
