My Gran used to live just off the Portobello Market in London - it's the area where they filmed Notting Hill. When I was a kid it wasn't nearly as posh as it is now. Floppy Hugh Grant types certainly wouldn't go there after dark ::) It was our local shopping street.
I remember shopping with her wicker basket on wheels - they don't seem to make them any more. She had a nylon shopping bag and she'd go to her favourite stall, hand over the bag and get all her veggies weighed straight into it. No wastage of endless little plastic bags.
Broken biscuits, day old cakes, bones for stock - we don't have them in the vocabulary now. Instead we have "reduced to clear" and BOGOF. Doesn't have the same ring to it somehow. I bet no-one under the age of 30 would understand the phrase "half day closing". I remember moving to a new area, you had to ask the neighbours when the local shops had half-days and what dairy delivered!
Aargh, nostalgia attacks... :-[0 -
Half day closing?? remember that?
What did we do before supermarkets were open all night & on Sundays?
I love my friendly local greengrocer - haven't bought supermarket fruit & veg for months. He has "proper" mucky carrots & always gives us things to taste. When I stand & look confused at the huge range of potatoes he asks me what I want them for & recommends the best. He doesn't mind if you spend £1 or £10. Actually spending £10 is quite difficult cos it's all so cheap.0 -
I came up with an idea yesterday saved me a fortune and burned of millions of calories as well
