Secondment Over - Advice Needed

Hi All,
I'm coming to the end of a pretty successful secondment, I really enjoy the work, however it's a long drive in each day. I'm now due to go back to my old role which is based at a location closer to where I live, hoever having been away for 6 months completing more interesting, complex and challenging work I have little interest in returning to my old role. I was taken aside and offered my seconded role on a permanent basis, however I turned it down as it's too far to travel daily and I can't re-locate, I was also a little disappointed that I couldn't complete the role at a location closer to my home as others in my department (but not my team) can, I have also realised there is little need for me to be on-site every day. I told my employer that if there was no oppertunity of doing my new role in a location closer to where I live then I'd prefer to leave the company and find employment elsewhere as I don't want to waste the new skills I have learned, my new Manager has asked me not to do this and has arranged a meeting with HR to discuss other possibilities.
What are my options, is meeting HR really a good idea?
Thanks

A bit bold, but it appears to have worked.I told my employer that if there was no oppertunity of doing my new role in a location closer to where I live then I'd prefer to leave the company and find employment elsewhere as I don't want to waste the new skills I have learned, my new Manager has asked me not to do this and has arranged a meeting with HR to discuss other possibilities.
Goodluck with HR. Major on how you really like doing the job and that you would like to continue at a better location, because the secondment location is not sustainable in the long term. And on what could be done [if anything] to help you relocate.
But there is no point in saying anything more about leaving to continue in this kind of role.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
If you don't have to be in the office every day to do the job, perhaps you could request if you could work from home/ closer location several days each week so the commute isn't so frequent.0

HR were pretty friendly when I visited them today, they reassured me that my old role was safe and I would default back to it when my secondment ended. I thanked them for this but stated that it didn't interest me anymore and that I was keen to continue my existing role at a location closer to home. Nothing was said about other oppertunities but HR pleaded with me not to apply externally and to have a follow up meeting with them at the end of the week which I agreed to.
I really didn't think they would be too bothered about me looking externally, while my secondment was successful on a personal level, I did make my fair share of mistakes on tasks that I was training and had been trained on and I thought the company would be happy for me to leave.0 -
