How I wish we could get some decent fruit.

I had the opposite experience today with Red delicious apples ( 1st time I have seen them loose for years) and ready to eat plums ( reduced to half price) today at Morrison's . Unlucky with tangerines ( some dried out but they were only 50p).
I think the problem is that UK shopper want fruit to last and so it is kept in gasses to stop ripening.
In France you won't find yellow bananas they are almost black ( due to sugar ... Ever so sweet ).
Also in north Africa they keep the sweetest oranges ( with black sugar spots ) as we won't buy them.
Its our own fault.

sainsburys basics are often red delicous and very cheap!0 -
The red apples currently on offer for £1 a pack in Lidl are the best I've found, good flavour and nice and crisp.
Personally I can't wait for my Laxtons apple tree to bear fruit - they're lovely straight off the tree!
If you want to taste really good fruit Thailand is the place. We went to a small uninhabited island for the day and they threw in lunch which was mostly fresh fruit, put me off buying "fresh" fruit here for a while. Pineapple was out of this world, the lychees were gorgeous (wont touch tinned ones!), I have never tasted fruit like it before or since! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
This is a good site for following week-by-week what fruit, veg, meat and fish are in season: http://eattheseasons.co.uk/ This is the UK/Ireland site, but there is also a USA/Canada site here: http://www.eattheseasons.com/ Interestingly, in the UK the only fruit currently 'in season' are all imported citrus fruits - might explain why a lot of the other fruit in stores at the moment is awful

I tend to buy loose rather than pre-packaged and rely on smelling the individual items of fruit (you should be able to tell if an apple is going to be good juicy one from its smell, melons and oranges are the same) before I buy and usually find that I don't get caught out this way.0

Much of the fruit and veg in supermarkets has been kept in cold stores - apples will keep for a year - and there's nothing on it usually which tells you when it was picked so you have no way of knowing how old it is.0

I was thinking this just the other day, I buy lots of fruit from habit but rarely fancy it these days as it is often so disappointing. I only every buy bananas and grapes from the big supermarkets, the rest comes from my local fruit stall, if there's not enough I go to Lidl / Aldi.I find a lot of fruit is tasteless this time of year.
Aldi's oranges are really good atm - tangy and sweet, not dry or watery-tasting like some. I bought their kiwi fruit and ppineapple too last week, which were lovely. Their bananas are just weird though, they are going black w/o actually ripening. I shall pulp them in smoothies for the sake of finishing them.ScarletRaven wrote: »in the UK the only fruit currently 'in season' are all imported citrus fruitsValue-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I refuse to buy any oranges/clementines from Aldi as all of my purchases of these ended up in the bin. They are either bitter, dry or loaded with pips (33 in one clementine!)0 -

I ate an apple from Aldi yesterday which I bought back in November. Nothing wrong with it.0 -
