I had actually read that the cf was a one-off..

...this is kind of academic debate though...

...how many people can afford to put a gross £50k into their pension fund...

there are only about an estimated 200k 50% tax payers...

I'll bet you £5 the OP is not one of them ;)

Jim, tha above debate aside, why do you (and many others to be fair) take such a narrow View?

All savings in a pension, ok done that now i'll put all savings on the mtg, etc. There is nothing actually stopping you from taking a balanced view and doing both? Or more?

You need to balance your short and long term needs. Doing well with the long term so far but at 100K no way are you finished. How much asn where will depend on what you haven't told us.

Your mtg rate, penalities for overpmt, cash buffer (is it 6 months or more?) S&S isas etc. If you have lots of cash, and S&S isas too then why not split the extra money each month between pension and mtg?

Where did you read that? Wherever it is, it's wrong. Carry forward is an "until further notice" feature of pension legislation.

I'm certainly not going to take that bet without good odds!

Not really the point though, as you were the one suggesting paying enough into a pension to reduce the income tax bill from 50% tax rate to 20% tax rate, so you can hardly blame me for running with your suggestion and helping to correct your understanding for future posts.
