Conditional Contract

Hi I just been sent a Conditional Offer and Conditional Contract via email for a job and will be sent the hard copies by post for me to sign and return. It is Conditional subject to references and other checks as its a banking job.

I am currently working and will have to give 4 weeks notice but my question is, shall I hand in my notice immediately or wait for the references and checks to be completed which may take time? My future employer has not given me a start date yet but I rather leave my current job asap.
Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks

Do not resign until you the offer becomes unconditional.

Remember that the references have to be satisfactory as far as the potential new employer is concerned and even something which you think is fine may not be to them. Wait and see. They will understand that you have to give four weeks' notice and should not expect you to start with them any earlier than four weeks after you have been told the offer is no longer conditional.

Don't leave your current job unless you're prepared to be out of work if the new offer is withdrawn.

The sensible thing to do is to wait whilst credit checks, references etc are all done and the offer can become unconditional.

That said, I have never waited and to date have yet to come unstuck but it is a higher risk strategy and is that risk worth an extra couple of weeks?

Wait until unconditional before handing notice. As others have said they may not come through as expected or it may take longer than the 4 weeks resulting in a time of unemployment.
