non purely office based jobs

Hi all

I'm looking for some advice/help. After working for a about 10 years in financial services I am looking for a new direction. I have a business related degree from 2002 (not honours) and lots of very specialised experience in an insurance related area. I am however becoming increasingly unhappy with the type of environment I work in and feel I have reached a crossroads in my career. I'm really looking for ideas which don't involve the following -

sitting in front of a computer all day every day
working in a large open plan office
anything which involves giving presentations or speaking to large goups of people

Ideally something which involves either working alone or at least allows me to get out and about a bit. I really don't mind interacting with people, just not large groups. The role would also have to be mentally stimulating. I would be happy to re-train/do a conversion course etc also.

Thanks for your time.

    Hi all

I understand where you are coming from. I have spent 20 odd years in offices. I am now looking into beauty therapy and nail technician courses. There's a lot of studying involved it's not just practical.

Good luck with whatever direction you choose.:)

I would suggest some retraining or being a freelance consultant. I have just been offered a job that is not desk based and I am THRILLED! I worked at a desk for 5 years and I cannot stand it any longer. I am also staying in my field of work.

Have you seen a careers advisor? They aren't just for teens! Good luck!

Just because he's got the hat, doesn't mean he'll be any good at it.

Seriously OP, think very, very hard about jumping ship. If you're likely to be made redundant within next 12 months or so, then a change of career would be a good move. But as a newbie "whatever you intend doing" you won't be first choice for recruiters/interviewers.

Even as a freelance or self employed you've got to find your customer(s).

Make a list of jobs/occupations that appeal to or interest you. Then do your research, thoroughly.

Old saying : the other man's grass is always greener. But, playing devil's advocate, it sometimes actually is.

I would love to retrain as an animal behaviourist. But outlay+risks outweigh the potential future benefit

Debt collector? See the other end of the financial services market ;-)
  • Auditors spend a lot of time visiting lots of different clients - but you will be in an office somewhere usually (unless say doing a stocktake in a warehouse) and need to use a computer - they can also spend a lot of time travelling to/from work (though employers pay for hotels etc. when the audit site is far from home)

A lot of the bigger firms have specific Financial Services audit divisions including the big Insurance companies - so your experience might be useful for that

How about something like an insurance claims assessor. Going back 30 years I was offered a job with an insurance company that would have involved working alongside people who investigated fire claims including site visits. I'm sure that sort of job hasn't gone away.
