Many goods sold in the UK are made or imported. Buying British can help UK manufacturers and may be more environmentally sustainable – yet if it costs more, would you pay more?

Which of these would you be willing to pay more for to buy British?

None
Cars
Your clothes
Childrens clothes
Groceries
Cosmetics and beauty items
Furniture
TVs, DVDs and other audio-visual
Computers and electronic devices
All of the above

    I ticked 'No'.
Why? Because companies should be using more than 'because it's British' to sell their product. They should complete on price, or be of a better quality.
If I had 2 comparable products, one British, one foreign - but British was more expensive, I'm unlikely to go for it. If the quality was notably better, then perhaps I would.

What I would say, is whilst I don't go out of my way to buy British, I do from time to time go out of my way to avoid products from certain countries (Argentina to give a recent example!).
  • I voted yes to all items.

It does depend on similar quality and the extra price not being excessive.

One big problem is that it is very difficult to tell how British products are. They may just be assembled in Britain.

Some products have very misleading labels. e.g. HP Sauce is now produced in Holland, even though it features a picture of Big Ben on the label and is 'By Royal Appointment'.
  • I voted no to all. I'd only pay more for higher quality, reliability or design regardless of the origin.

I'll buy from whoever gives me the best cost/quality (value) I can get. I couldn't care less about which particular location on Earth they were born in or the language they speak. Completely irrelevant to me.

I find it very strange that while society deems anti-immigration groups such as the BNP as abhorrent, the same mouths will openly admit to preferring British produce. We're not nationalist, we're just... nationalist?
Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”

  • why, because on the news today our eggs have gone up because of the rules imposed on British egg producers, but european egg producers dont have to comply with the rules we set.therefor our egg producers are losing out because we buy (it ok if you can afford to by more expensive foods) the cheaper eggs.STOP the imports of any food that doesnt meet our standards.that will make it a level playing field for home produced goods and then support British food.

I voted YES to all, though in all honesty I don't think it should be necessary to pay more, but I'd far sooner do so and be even more proud to be British.

Why should so much have to be transported across the world when we have the manpower to produce so much here, and keep our carbon footprint down.

Very little these days can be described as purely British. Multinationalism ensures that. Not necessarily a bad thing...but determining from where goods come is not necessarily that simple.

I wouldn't spend a penny extra to buy anything just because it is from a particular country (I'm Indian, so that includes India, Britain or Timbuktu).

The only reason I can cite is that I just can't afford to buy anything but products which to me represent the best value for my hard earned money!

Lol, you know as well as I do that's a crock of !!!!. British companies can't compete on price for most goods because labour costs are higher. At least be honest about it.

From my perspective I try to by british products where possible and will pay slightly more for them (meat products for example), but for some items like cars although I'd like to get one manufactured in this country, quality is paramount so the one I've chosen is manufactured abroad, but was chosen because my research suggested it was the best quality, affordable car for my purposes.
