In my area - Suffolk - it seems to be possible, though you have to download "Overdrive" and it only seems to work on Kindle fire, I have the basic original kindle and paperwhite so assume it won't work for me.I am not technically gifted, so if anyone knows a way round this problem (apart from buying another kindle), I'd appreciate it.
There are ways round it but it involves removing the DRM from the books to allow you to convert them to the azw/mobi. And as this also 'breaks' the borrowing aspect of the book its not something I'd recommend you try.
For anyone who thinks they would make use of their library's ebook service but own a Kindle (and likes to buy their books from Amazon), the best option would be to either consider buying a cheap second hand epub ereader to be used just for library books. The Kobo Touch, Kobo Mini, Kobo Glo, Nook Simple Touch, Sony PRS-T1/T2 are all worth looking for second hand on ebay (although the Sony's will probably be too dear).
Or, if you have a tablet (android, ipad or the Kindle Fire), the easiest option to allow you to read library books is to simply install the Overdrive app on your tablet.
Personally, I don't like reading on my tablet, and have an old second hand Sony ereader that I can use for library books.0 -

Calibre might help, worth trying, as long as you don't download the add on that lets you remove DRM, on its own it's perfectly legal to use as a useful tool to manage your ebooks on your pc .0 -
Calibre won't help as all library books have DRM (as it is required to limit the time you can borrow them for) and Calibre (without the addition of relevant tools) will just tell you the book can't be opened as it has DRM.
You cannot read library ebooks here in the UK on a Kindle ereader without breaking the DRM. It is the one big negative of the Kindle IMHO, and its a pity a lot of people buy them before realising that. Edit, in the US you can borrow Kindle ebooks, so I live in hope that they will eventually allow us to do so here too.0 -
It's really annoying that kindle USA allow library books, but not UK. My son bought me the second Kindle, if I'd realised I've have got another make so could use the library.0
