can anyone help with sickness benefit info?

for years i have struggled trying to work out what my other half is suffering from. now after 8 years a couple of doctors they have definitely recognised that he has a problem. all these years i had been struggling to keep the household together and patience etc. the doctor has said to look into the benefits to help him out at the moment. i see there are 2 sorts for employement support allowance. one related to income and another for something else. can anyone advise?
also i have been claiming tax credits until then to help us out so not sure how this would work toghether. we are both self employed but he cannot work anymore at the mo at least. thanks for any help.
