How canI find out what internet explorer version I'm using

I've seen adverts on the web for IE9 but I don't know what interent version I'm using at the moment anyway. Where does it tell me? I've looked on the properties and the system page but nothing there to tell me. How do you then find out if you can run IE9 with your system and is it a free thing to upgrade to IE9 and why should I do it?
How is it better/ different?
My PC is a Dell Dimension E521 running Vista Home premium.
Thanks.

    Hello,

If you click on HELP and then ABOUT while in IE it will tell you what version you are using.

If you launch Internet Explorer and select Help/About Internet Explorer, you'll get the version you're currently running.
IE9 should run on Vista but there have been complaints it slows things down. Having said that, it is a good idea to update it to close some security holes.

Not sure if it's better than IE8 as I don't use it (Firefox for me).

It might be worth trying a different browser for a change (Firefox, Opera, Chrome, etc) to see if you get on better with them.

IE9 is a free upgrade (and may already have been done) and so are the other browsers I mentioned above.

Thanks both. Its IE7. Its Grandmas computer I'm looking at. I'e lent her my pc whilst I fix hers. I don't want to change to IE9 at the mo as I think that might be what made my own pc go dead slow and stop but I need to check if that's was what we put on it. Perhaps I should update to IE8?
Need to look into the browser thing a bit more.
