CEMAP/career in mortgages

Hey guys, I'm looking for some advice at the moment from some of the more experienced mortgage advisors/brokers on here :o

At the moment I work for a well-known bank in the City of London, I've been there for nearly 2 years, since finishing university, and things were going pretty well - last year I made just under £30k, which I don't consider too bad for my age (early 20s.)

As part of my training at the bank I was enrolled in, and have passed, CEMAP 1, although I don't have any direct practical experience with mortgages in my line of work (plenty of sales practice though!)

It's now been announced that most of my department will likely be made redundant by summer 2012 :( I really enjoy working in finance and wish to continue doing so, and I've been reading up on mortgages and a career as a mortgage broker, so my plan now is to study for CEMAP modules 2 and 3 with the aim of becoming a mortgage adviser/broker.

My question - is this a good idea in the current climate? i.e. can driven mortgage brokers earn a reasonable living? I have finance and sales experience, a university degree, and plenty of drive - would I have a chance of getting a job as a broker should I complete modules 2 and 3? Roughly what would the wages be like over the first couple of years?

Thanks in advance for all your help :)
