Gift cards for supermarket shopping

I would think it wouldn't be a cash advance. If, for instance, you bought an itunes giftcard at an asda checkout with the rest of your shopping then they can't separate out what is technically a cash payment and what isn't.

Plus, I have an energyplus card from my energy supplier, which I load up to get 10% off at argos and homebase. I top up with my credit card with no problems there.

As with anything if you don't get a cast iron answer, contact the company and ask

A lot of people do this, there is even one religious sect ( won't name them as they can be litigious) who have told the faithful they have to use gift cards to get their shopping from now on and if they get asked to tell the shop staff its irreligious for them to handle money, when its actually the head honchos in the religion selling the gift cards at face value to the 'faithful' while getting them at a discount themselves xx

I used to work for a firm that had gift cards with discount. I lived with my parents at the time and put £100 on an Asda card each month as like boarding money. I also put on £40 each month on a Sainsburys gift card for fuel as Asda near us doesn't have a petrol station.
Got about 6% discount on both.

Just thought I'd update this thread as I have now been using these gift cards for a few months. Have probably saved many 10's and possibly over £100 already. Just by doing my normal shopping but using the gift cards.

For example, I regularly buy multiple £50 gift cards for Sainsburys (5% discount) and Asda (4% discount).
I then fill up with fuel periodically at Sainsburys (£50 at a time) - is equivalent to around 7.5p off per litre!
I use the Asda gift cards for all my grocery shopping :-)

In addition, I have used Cineworld (10% discount) £20 gift cards, and WH Smiths (8% discount) £20 gift cards for all my relevant spending there.

I am just about to embark on my biggest potential saving yet. Am considering booking a Thomson holiday for the family at nearly £5,000.
I can get Thomson gift cards at 6% discount, so this could save me around £300! I haven't found ANY other way of getting a discount off a Thomson holiday.....
(I think I have to pay for 'some' of the holiday on normal credit card so that I get the credit card liability cover).

I work for the NHS, and this thread reminded me to look through discounts! Knew could get discount for Argos but never thought of against supermarket! Know what I will do next pay day!

Also get M&S and Morrisons discount but rarely shop there so not worth it for me.

It's funny how we get discounts for a different range of stores.

'I' get discounts for about 20 or 30 places ranging from 4% at Asda through to 10% at Cineworld, H Samuels and others.

But we don't get discounts for Morrissons as you appear to get.

Bit of a shame as they are currently building a brand new Morrissons supermarket and petrol station just down the road from me :-(

The pin on Sainsburys gift cards is to check the balance of them when you phone their careline as there is an option to do this as I found a gift card amongst my rubbish in my purse and found I still have £4.50 on there! Be putting that towards clothing or a bottle of wine.
