received a p800 from HMRC saying that i owe 325.00 due to an underpayment of medical benefit for 2011/12 from my previous employment this employment ended last June due to redundancy and that my tax code will be adjust accordingly for the 2012/13 period - i havent had the new coding notice yet

What i was wondering - first off as the redundancy effectively stopped all medical benefits i was getting from the day i was made redundant - would this money still be owed - cos if i had have needed it i wouldn't have been able to use it any way
and OK if this money is still owed (and if it is i will have to pay it)

can i go to HMRC and pay it in one lump sum and then still get my full tax allowance for 2012/13

With medical benefit it depends on when and how your employer pays for it.

If the employer pays for it monthly it's likely that they will only pay for the months that you actually work there, However, if they pay for it annually, then they will pay for the full year despite you not working there for the full year.

It may have been the case that they did pay for it annually, and normally you will have been able to access the benefit, despite having left the employer, for the term of the policy.

If you want to pay it up front, call HMRC and ask them for a 'voluntary payment slip' (P254) and they will send one to you. You can then use this to make the payment by cheque.
