Changing GP due to..........................

Two years ago we moved to another part of the country and as such, registered with a GP. In that two years, he has repeatedly said he has very little experience/knowledge of anyone with my problem (ileal conduit). Whenever I have been ill, it is me that is leading the way, advising how I should be treated. It has to be said that he has welcomed this, along with the 25 yrs knowledge and experienced gained.

Sadly this isn't reassuring and there is a current investigation being carried out as to a recent lapse of treatment.

This now is leading me along the path of considering a transfer to another practice. My question is, do I as a mere patient have the right to take myself elsewhere?. Aside from the outcome of the investigation, I feel we have now come to the point of saying that I have a loss of confidence at this practice.

    Yes you can move doctors.
Just go to the doctors you want to register with and ask them how to register.
Your notes/file will then be transferred from your current doctor.
    Hope it goes OK.

Yes you do, and you don't need to give a reason. Once you find another practice, ask if you can register there and your notes will be sent on to that surgery.

I moved GP recently. Found one I liked the look of who was accepting new patients , walked in and signed up. Simples.
They're only at the most a mile apart and nobody asked questions it just happened.
  • You don't need to give a reason for changing surgeries, however it might be worth you having a discussion with the surgery you want to move to, to make sure they have a doctor who is able to treat your specific condition. It would be a shame to go to the effort of moving practices only to find you're no better off and the new doctor knows nothing about it either!

Could you see a different GP at your current practice?

If you do not feel you are getting the care you deserve then of course you should move to another practice. It may be worth, as others have mentioned, calling round the other local GP surgeries to find out their experience in relation to your condition. Or if you attend a specialist could they advise which local GP would be best?
