What sort of training is available for mature man

Hello
After looking at the benefits thread I suspect that my husband will not pass the new ESA medical (he is currently on IB) and even if he does after 12 months he will get nothing as I work part time.
He has not worked for 12 years after an accident at work in the building industry. He will not be able to work in this sector again as he has numerous medical and physical problems.
What sort of re-training would be available to him, he can work a computer quite well but cannot sit or stand very long or walk very well. I have looked on the directgov/jobs website but never see anything that he could actually do. There are things like aeriel installer and the usual sales/call centre jobs advertised but he would rather starve than do sales as he is not a confident person and would make himself ill with the thought of it.
Does anyone have any experience of training courses offered for the long term sick, thrown on the scrapheap types.
Thank you
