I love John West peppered Mackerel but can't seem to find it anymore, they do have Smoked peppered Mackerel but I hate the smokey taste. Why have John West stopped selling tins of plain peppered Mackerel?:(

I looked at https://www.john-west.co.uk and according to the website they only have smoked peppered mackerel. Maybe you could email them and ask ?
Hazarding a guess I would suggest that as mackerel is such a cheap fish, it doesn't make financial sense for John West to can it without adding things like smoke n peppers or tomato sauce to justify the price.
If this is recent, maybe you'll find cans in 99p Stores, Poundland etc ??0 -
I did email them but as the wife told me as usual I have got it all backwards, what I used to have was John West smoked peppered mackerel, but the only one that I can find now is John West WOOD smoked peppered Mackerel, the wood smoke leaves an unpleasant taste.0

Try Lidl (or Aldi), they used to have huge boxes of tinned mackerel in a variety of flavours, and at about half the price of John West / supermarket.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

I did have a look in Lidl and they have loads of tinned fish of all descriptions but I don't think that they had any smoked peppered Mackerel, it may sound ultra fussy but it's maddening when you find a product which you really enjoy and the manufacturer changes the recipe even slightly which in my opinion has altered the flavour. I suppose it's like those who complained about the Earl Grey tea being improved?0

Er, I'm wondering what you thought they smoked it with before <confused>0 -
I have no idea what they smoked them with before but the wood smoked ones which incidentally come in a different tin stating that they are "wood smoked mackerel" rather than the previous "smoked mackerel" do have a distinct taste of burned wood rather than a rather pleasant smokey flavour.0

Lidl usually has whole smoked mackerel in the chilled section, maybe you could try one ? Usually £1 something per fish, individually priced.0

Thanks that is an idea I might give it a go although I always liked the option of having a couple of tins of peppered smoked mackerel in the cupboard just for those times when I fancied one.0
