Not sure if this is in the wrong place.
Can anyone tell me if a second income is exempt from National Insurance or not?

No it is not exempt! It is still included in the calculations.
You pay NI contributions on the total profit in that tax year, whether it is from one source or six!0 -
It depends on the source of the second income.
If it's PAYE and you earn less than approx £90 a week, then you won't have to pay NI. If you earn more, your employer will take it off automatically for you.
If it's self employed income and it's less than approx £4500 pa, you can apply for a Small Earnings Exemption Certificate, and you won't have to pay any NI. If you earn more than that, you'll have to pay Class 2 NI which is £2.10 a week.
Check the HMRC website for more accurate figures if your second income is around what I've said! Here I go again on my own....0
