The company can put whatever leave policy they want into place providing they grant you your holidays during the course of the year. A trade union would make no difference.

It's very very poor practice to just not respond to a holiday request but there is little you can do about it except give their required 30 days notice. Ideally book most of your holiday for the year right at the start of the holiday year.

Came into the office today and the approval form was on my desk - the day of my holiday. Submitted it on the 20th of February. Pretty shocking practice.

You are joking right? So no one thought to tell you before? I think they are taking the P!! What have you said to them?

Oh that really is shockingly bad practice! Is it a small firm? My personal experience has been that larger, national or multi-national firms, with layers of HR and line managers, are often actually easier to deal with as an employee than very small firms, where there is only one person dealing with HR issues who, if you don't get on well with them, can make life hell.
So, what did you do when you saw the approval form? I do hope that you turned on your heel, went home, and enjoyed a nice day off!

It turns out my colleague, who applied for the same day's holiday, put her request in on the 16th of February. She was told yesterday evening that she had the day off - after a fight with my MD who described her as being a 'pain for asking about it' - which hasn't sit at all well with her, as you can probably imagine. We're both hard-working money-earners for the company, and, admittedly self-describing here, incredibly reasonable people. We're not trouble-makers - a bit outspoken at times, arguably, but not much else.

When I noticed the form this morning, I loudly decried that I was going home so everyone could hear me, I did say "Thank you" in the general direction of my MD, and then left, feeling a touch like a criminal, even though I know I haven't really done a thing wrong.

I'll be treated passive aggressively on Monday by said MD, I'm sure. She won't know why she's doing it, but that's what will happen. Today, I intend to look for other work. This is beyond a joke.

It's not a tiny company - 40 employees in the factory (mostly Polish), 13 office staff. A second unit was built recently up North housing some 7 members of staff, although two have already left citing ill-treatment.

30 days in advance? You might want to mention as you hand your notice in that a 30 day advance warning of one day's leave shows their lack of management skills, nothing else.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I would not have said thank you, I would have said "I am on my own time" and given her a piece of my mind for making me come in on the day of the requested leave.

Sounds like your MD is on a power trip. The business is their world and they can't see beyond. The best thing you can do is know the rules and navigate around them. Hopefully there are more pro's that outweight this odd controlling behaviour. Good luck and stay calm! With these restrictions, get used to booking your entire year in advance at the start of the year, she may not like it a re-write the rules again!
