Liquid/gel eyeliner at over 50

I am over 50 and fancy wearing either gel or liquid eyeliner as I've heard it stays put more than pencil but I read in magazines that its too harsh on older women. Does anyone here over 50 use it and if so which one is the best?

Don't believe the nonsense you read in magazines! I would suggest buying the cheapest black liquid eyeliner you can find in Superdrug (2True I think is £2) and seeing if it suits you.

i think the trick is to not have black, go for a brown or grey and if its a little hard, just smudge or blend in with eyeshadow.

avon have some great ones with free gifts at the moment

I use a medium brown one.

Black was always much too harsh for me even when I was much younger than I am now.

I agree, don't go for black!
Unless you have naturally tanned skin, then it wont be such a harsh contrast

I would suggest a gel liner rather than a liquid, the liquid tends to settle into any crepey crinkly bits around the eyes and can look a bit 'feathery' and odd. Gel liner is a thicker consistency & tends to stay where you put it! If you find the line too harsh you can blend a little dark eyeshadow over it when it's dry and smudge it out a bit. A really crisp harsh line does become more difficult to pull off as we get older but if you soften it with the shadow it's still a great way of adding definition

Oh and you can also 'set' pencil by blending a matching eyeshadow over it. You could always go to a department store and ask one of the makeup ladies to help you with the technique(you can always run off to Boots afterwards and buy a budget version!)

Yup, stay away from the black! Taupe, brown or even navy work best. I'm nearly 53, so I know what you're saying

I am 54 and love the Smashbox cream eyeliners, they do a waterproof one called Jet Set. MAC paint pots as well. I never wear black never have as I am blond and fair. Bronze, brown, taupe, golds, purples etc and not problems.

I'm over 50 and regularly wear a black eyeliner on my top lid but then I blend eyeshadow over it to soften the effect. I only every wear grey or dark blue on my bottom lid tho (I have blue eyes) - in this case I agree that black is way too harsh. I'm a big fan of Avon Glimmersticks and their liquid eyeliner (all under £5).

i always wear eyeliner, either pencil, Gel or liquid and i am over 50. I usually only wear black for evening but use myriad of colour for daytime depending on what am wearing, -dark green, blue, navy, purple. so long as it looks good and you like it then wear it
