Cheap treated timber for garden use

Options
I need a load of timber to build a big composter in my garden and when I price it up in B&Q it's looking really expensive. I need something like 40m of 150mm wide treated board. B&Q do 25mm thick for about a pound per metre but I probably only need 15mm thick (which I hope I can get more cheaply).

Any ideas?

try carboots, or markets they tend to have cheaper wood

or how about using old pallets to make your composter, B&Q might even let you have some old broken ones for free

If you have a branch of Wickes near you try them.
I just bought a load of wood to make some trellis to top off my fences.

It cost me £22 to get enough wood to make ten 6ft x 1 ft panels.
That's a lot cheper than buying them made up !

Thanks guys - I tried Wickes and they're the same price as B&Q, I looked at the palletts idea but I want something that's really going to last a while and I don't think pallets are as hardy as treated boards.

I did find a local merchant coming in at 88p a metre but it's not going to save me much..

    Where are you?

There are some Community Wood Recycling Projects around, I think the first was in Brighton and I know there's another in Bristol. See if that link points you to any others.

Also if you're in Bristol we've got a load of old fence bits just lying around the garden, free to collector. PM me and I'll describe them!

Or there's Freecycle - if you look on the England board there's more about it there, but if someone near you has any wood to give away it might be there ...

Thanks for the offer savvy_sue, I'm way up north though. Thanks for the links too, the freecycle idea is a really good one, like it alot.
