With the reasoning being no money in the company to pay redundancy.
Not me, but someone i know. Am curious as to what the law is on this. I think they've been employed with the company for longer than 12 months, but not 100% sure.

You need to read your contract firstly to determine how long you have been there and secondly to see what the contractual redundancy scheme is.
Is the company continuing or is it being declared insolvent? For statutory redundancy you must have been employed for two years to be able to make a claim so by the sounds of it you wont qualify if the company is insolvent and you are owed.
If its not insolvent and you are owed money then it may require you to go to court but you could speak to the Redundancy Payments Office for advice http://www.bis.gov.uk/insolvency/about-us/our-offices/redundancy-payments0 -

Statutory min is 2 years before you get redundancy pay. 12 months to go through the redundancy process (but no pay).
Their contract may provide for better terms, though.
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -
