Council tax - new house

We moved into a house we built last August and I called the council then to tell them about our change of address for council tax. I've spoken to them since in about November but we've still not received a council tax bill. I don't want to end up having to pay all the back tax but I was told to just wait for a bill and don't really think it's up to me to have to chase them! Anyone had a similar experience or got thoughts on this?

Thanks

Dave

Has it been banded yet ?
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Not as far as I'm aware, haven't heard a peep.

Unless your in Scotland the council have nothing to do with the banding, its the Valuation Office who are responsible. The council cannot legally bill you until the property has been banded.

You can check the property here - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_4017252

you can search Scottish council tax bands online at http://www.saa.gov.uk/
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • The banding isn't the issue. It's will I get hit with back council tax from last August even though I've told them and they've done nothing about it?

I'd have thought it's a dead cert. But presumably you have been putting the money aside?

    Yep. 'Fraid so.
And the amount from August to 31st March is going to be due in one lump sum and all they need to do is give you 14 days from the date of the bill to pay it. The new year will get split into instalments. When you get the bill, you can ask the council if they will spread the back pay over the current year and as they have been slow to get the bill out they may do that - but they don't actually have to.
