Why do you want this job?
How would you persuade someone to switch their fuel supplier?
What would you say to someone who says "I'm registered with TPS"
What would you say to someone who said "I'm not interested"
How do you react to being sworn at?
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

If it's competency based you're probably looking to prepare examples of times when:

...you've had to work to a strict deadline/target
...you have had to talk someone around to your point of view
...you've convinced someone to buy/commit to more than they originally intended
...you've contributed to a team target
...you've had a target that you weren't achieving and you rectified it
...you've coped under pressure and succeeded

Then when you've got your examples organised in your head, you can apply them to the questions asked which are going to be around these kind of areas. This should mean you'll have to do much less thinking on the fly.

If it is a competency based interview then they will be looking for specific examples.

For instance they may ask something along the lines of. "Can you explain to me how you give good customer service".

An answer along the lines of: I always give good customer service as I ask the customer what they want. I am always polite and smile etc etc, is frankly a waste of time and will score poorly.

A competency based interview is designed to allow a candidate to give specific examples.

The best way to tackle a competency based question is by using the STAR method.

    Situation
    Task
    Action
    Result

So going back to the Customer Service question. You would structure an answer as follows

    Situation

There was an occassion when I was working in a shoe shop

    Task

A customer came in and wanted a pair of Size 11'S Black but we only had them in Brown

    Action

I went out and checked the stock room but there were none available. The Customer was in desperate need and wanted them for an interview the next day. We had another shop at the otehr end of the High St so I rang them up and found that they had them in stock, I asked my colleague to put them to one side as the customer was going to make his way up shortly to collect them.

    Result

The Customer went to the shop and collected his shoes, he actually cam back the next day after his interview and asked to speak to my manager and proceeded to praise me telling my manager of the service he had received

The above example is by no means the most detailed answer but it gives you an idea of what they are looking for when interviewing at a competency based interview.

You should spend approximately 10% of your answer on S, 10% on T, 70% on A and 10% on R.

Also steer clear of saying'we' and 'the team'. They are interviewing you they don't care what Joe Bloggs did. Make sure you use 'I' as this gives you ownership of the example

    Good Luck

The above is exactly the advice you need. Things you maybe asked you can google and the whole web is full of them!

    Eg of good customer service
Eg of working as a team to achieve a goal
    Eg of dealing with complaint
Eg of your strengths and weaknesses
Eg of a time you were treated poorly
Eg of meeting a target or exceeding
Eg of missing targets and what you did
Eg of a time you didnt get along well with someone in the team. What did you do.
    Eg of taking ownership.
    Eg of leadership

Take your time when answering. If you cant think, just say can i have a min to think about this. If you cannot answer at all just be honest and say i need time for that question can i come back to it.

Dont use words like alright mate yes mate no mate. Try not to give yes or no answers to interview questions. Smile and look them in the eye. Dont do the "walk". Be professional. Ontime, suited. Take a copy of your job spec and CV with you, also a pen. Id, sample interview questions to revise on the way. Put this in a folder.#

Some answers can be repetitive and thats ok. For example -

    Eg of good customer service.

Customer came through had a complaint of his contract. I listened to the customer and made sure i understood what was going on and emphasised blah blah in the end he was very happy that his matter was resolved and gave good feedback

Eg of a time you sold something.
Once the customer was happy that i dealth with the situation, i also informed the customer of the saving they could make if they took up X package and X package and on the same call i ended up selling a new package to the customer.

Something along those lines. You have to make up your own based on your own experiences.

As you will now have worked out, there is nowhere you can find the answers other than from your own experience.
Make all your answers have a positive outcome and use the STAR method described above.
Prepare good solid answers and practice them in your head. Don't learn them to repeat them parrot fashion, but make your responses sound natural and unrehearsed.
They are expecting you to have done this and be well prepared for the interview.
