rights returning to work from maternity

Hi i was wondering if anyone could advise me on my rights returning to work following maternity leave. I worked full time 37.5 hours before having my son, i am taking the full year and with annual leave wont have to return until the end of sept. They have announced whilst i have been off that they will now offer anyone on maternity half their original hours if they want to go part time. my situation is i dont earn enough to warrant going back at all but need to keep my hand in for my share options, does anyone know where i stand if i only want to go back one day per week? is it just a case of managers discression or is there a law? any advice would be appreciated.

its all at the discretion of the manager,- but if there offering half the hours then your in a stronger position to try and meet in the middle.

    Congratulations xx

Your only legal right is to return to the same position on the same terms and conditions as before.

If your employer is willing to allow you to work half time, that's more than your legal right.

And you may be able to agree something different again, but you don't have that right.

Also note that if you do agree something different, you don't have the right to change it again - so suppose you do just a day for a year, and then want to increase your hours again, you don't have an automatic right to do so.
