If you regularly buy garlic, ginger root, fresh chillies etc pre-packed from your local supermarket you will be paying far too much.
In Bolton, our local market has adapted to cater for the Asian community and sells fantastic fresh produce from casava to mooli, and chillies to garlic.
Last week I bought:
2 garlic bulbs, 4 large red chillies, a handful of small green chillies and a piece of ginger root. The price??, an embarassingly small 53p! :j
An additional bonus is that the regulars are quite happy to stop and chat about the best way to cook the veg the newbies aren't so familiar with, and advise which chillies are hot and which are mild.
Go and have a look at your local market, you may find something similar.

thanks for that, i would also love a local shop (Aldershot/Hampshire) that sells sarsaparilla.0

I found brown mustard seeds were viable for sprouting. At about 75p for 250g from the local shop, this is a real saving on official seed packet seeds.

1KG whole cashews = £3.99!
1KG almonds = £3.99!
They must be nuts! They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!0 -
as a asian, i have always shopped in these types of shops and found the quality of the produce to be fair superior than anything in the supermarkets.
It makes me laugh to think that people think that the prices are too cheap. In fact, the prices are right, its just the fact that large supermarkets are easily able to make a massive markup on a often less quality product due to people lack of awareness of these shops.0 -
Sand man - your signature is hailarious!
Hallelujah to the Asian shops btw0 -
There's so many things in the Asian shops that I would LOVE to try. Have tried to ask the shop assistants but most could not tell me
Is there any site (with pics preferably) showing the name of the produce and how you prepare them?0 -
I second that,Sand man it is really funny
I have just seperated from my husband of 13 years after finding out he is having an affair
I think I'd like to do that to him no matter where I was in my cycle0 -
