BAILIFF letter for money I don't owe - HELP

I had a letter from the Bailiffs regarding a debt for H M Customs for a tax bill at a period of time that I was unemployed.
It appears that my Accountant hadn't sent the forms to inform them that I was no longer self employed or had my business.
I have rung HM Customs who are sending me the forms for me to fill out to confirm this information, but say that they are unable to cancel the bailiff until they have looked at the forms and acted on them, as the bailiff has bought the debt.
I am a single parent on a low wage but not on any benefits, my car is paid and I don't have a garage or anywhere I can keep it as I live in the middle of a field around 1/2 mile off the main road, so hiding it isn't a choice.
I just need to know is there any letter that I can send them to stop them visiting until the investigation reaches the fair conclusion that I don't owe the £3,700 that they claim I owe.
Many thanks in advance

is it a letter from the debt collection agency you meant? give them a ring and say you are sorting it out with HMRC, they should be able to suspend the debt for 28 days or something while you are getting it sorted out.0
