I'm not sure where this goes or if there is anyone here that can help but its to do with income tax. I started a new job recently and have just had my first month payslip. My basic was £2,662 and the tax was £865. This is without national insurance. That seems a lot of income tax to pay on £2,662.
I called payroll and they told me it was correct. To me it seems something very wrong.I know nothing about tax codes but mine is 451T.
Could that be an emergency tax code?
Can someone help me or pass ono someone that can?
Thank you.
Neal

Most people get the basic tax allowance of £7,475, your code says that you get £4,510 and the T means that it changes often so they will review it regularly.
Do you get any benefits from your work ie car, fuel etc?
What was your tax code at your last job?

Payroll are partly correct in that if they've been told by HMRC to use a code of 451T, then that's what they have to use. You need to sort it out with HMRC if the code turns out to be wrong.
Edit: Actually, that is wrong. If they've used a code of 451T, the tax should be ~£457. Did you give in a P46 from your previous job when you started at your new job?Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard0 -
I am normally on the 'cutting tax' thread and am just lurking. As ceh 209 says, the tax due on you salary on 451T is around £457 per month. The employer has messed up here, it would appear.
Did you hand in an old P45 from a previous employer where you received some kind of benefits e.g. car?
Can you post up the full details from your payslip?0 -

Its been a god send while I've got 3 tax codes for 6 months!0 -
I have had this exact problem before. Print out a p46 (just google it and youll get the form) fill out page 1, your employer fills out page 2 and send off - you get a rebate of the tax overpaid in your following months wages.Saving for our next step up the property ladder0
