I'd squeeze the lemon into a glass of boiled water and stir in a teaspoon of honey then sip on it. I don't know if that's the best advice but that's what I'd do with it!

Also, I'd breathe in loads of steam often from a bowl with a towel over my head.

Hope you feel better soon, I've been ill for two weeks now with a cough, cold and a bad glandular infection!

  • Agree with Angel, spoon of honey and squeeze of lemon. If you want home made lemsip then add a soluable painkiller (tho not if you've already taken any of them!!). A slug of whiskey if you have it can also make you think you feel better :)

I think if you have a cough, sleeping propped up a bit on pillows helps as well - a good night's sleep can make all the difference ot how you feel. Oh yeah, that's the other thing you can do for free - REST!!

    Hope you feel better soon!

A cup of lemonade heated up with a tablespoon of honey and a squeeze of a fresh lemon to take the sweetness off, swallow a couple of paracetemol and then drink this comforting drink. Probably has the same effect as commercial cold remedies, but without all the chemicals. ( apart from the paracetemol of course)

Hi guys, I know this is an old thread but thought it might be useful to give it a bit opf life again as it may be useful given the time of year.
By the way do you think the squeezy lemon will be a good sub for fresh lemon?

My grandmother had the most revolting cold remedy - onion juice! You thinly slice a large onion in a bowl and sprinkle over some sugar, cover it and next morning you have sweet onion juice. Idea is you have a couple of tablespoons every few hours.

Still, it made sure we didn't pass on our colds to anyone else, as no-one wnated to come near the stinky onion breath kids!

Oh Yes--plastic lemon works just as well as real ones, because if your house is anything like ours, the patient will want a remedy about 11:30 at night!

I try to keep a bottle of good high strength blackcurrant squash for the hot water, then put the lemon & honey into that. Adds a bit of flavour & perhaps some vit C, or that might be psychological of course....

My uncle swore blind, that having a spoonful of honey a day from locally sourced hives, kept colds at bay. Have to say I can't remeber him having that many sniffles......

  • I know this won't be much help to someone with a cold at the moment but perhaps they will be interested to know how they may reduce the chance of further colds/flu/upper respiratory tract infections.

The evidence of Vitamin D3's role in fending off two of the commonest infections in the western world - colds and flu - has come from research by US scientists who gave supplements of the vitamin to 208 women over three years in a randomised controlled trial. Half the women were given a 800iu dose of vitamin D3, increased to 2000iu/daily after two years, and the other half were given a placebo. Those who took the genuine vitamin reported a 70 per cent reduction in colds and flu, from 30 episodes to nine over the three-year study.
