New freelancer - telling HMRC?!

Hello, I did a bit of freelance work last year outside of my normal 9-5 job. I thought it was just a few odd bits of temporary work. I first invoiced the client in October. However since January they've got more work lined up for me. So now that it's going to be ongoing I've decided to register with HMRC, but on the self assessment registration form they ask me for the date I started being a sole trader. But seeing as you have to tell them within 3 months of becoming self employed I'm not quite sure what to do. Obviously I don't want to get fined!
