The best thing about the paper bags is being able to bin the whole thing without having to handle the dust. However, to save money I buy them on eBay, plus it's easier than hunting through the shops as it's a bit random who will and who won't have bags in for a vacuum cleaner from the 1970s. I find the shops who do stock them tend to run out and I have to wait a while before they're back again. No doubt people's purchasing trends are a bit random for the older models and perhaps when people do find them they stock up.

I too use the bagless vacuum now - but in my old 'bag' cleaners I used to cut off the ends and use a 'bulldog' clip - and managed to get an average of 6 -8 uses from them!
