Mum (born 1956) refers to things (like the meter cupboard, or a cupboard full of unespected "treasures") as a glory hole...I do too (born 1975). I know what its "other meaning" is, but since I'm not using it in that context I don't let it bother me.

I remember, not so many years ago, being openly laughed at by a group of peers (NOT friends, please note)...talking about wedding presents between hubby and wife....and me saying that I had been so happy that my hubby had given me a pearl necklace. I had No.I.Dea. Once I looked it up I was upset that they had tried to spoil my joy of a much-wanted gift with smut....so now I don't let stuff like that bother me :)

Aaaanyway, back on topic :D Loving this thread :) Mum made all my dolls clothes one Christmas when Nanna bought me a doll...she later made a whole dressing up box of outfits for the children which they used until they were just coming to the end of primary school.

My Dad (16 years older than Mum - scandal ;) ) would rather "shut that telly off and put the wireless on" :)

I was born in 1973 and went to an old fashioned "Young ladies" school that hadn't changed since the 1950's - including the staff! It was very strict and old fashioned, with the emphasis on hearty meals (stodge) and fresh air exercise.

I would have loved to have attended an old fashioned school for girls! I used to dream of going to finishing school!

Oh to have been taught home economics, sewing, deportment and elocution!!

I will just watch my Ladette to Lady DVDs instead!

Not offensive as such, just anyone under 25 seems to have it associated entirely with something quite different. It's a hole in the wall of a men's public toilet that is used for.... well  :o

I'm 25 and had no idea it had a dirty meaning!

Heh, it is still in use in some areas - did a glassblowing course the other weekend and had to stifle a giggle every time I heard it! (And I am well over 25...) It is the name of the 're-heating' oven that you put the molten glass into for a bit when it is starting to cool too much to work. Can see how it got the name - there is a small hole in the front to keep as much heat in as possible, and it really radiates a lot of heat and light!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

    Please!

It happens all the time - at work people say something and I totally miss the actual meaning. I didn't think I was naive but maybe I am!

There are also new, more deadly strains of e coli and other bugs around now, partly as a result of the over-use of antibiotics.

Ooohhh.... Don't get me started! New/drug resistant strains of bacteria have been discovered regularly from about 2 minutes after antibiotics went on general release. MRSA has actually been around since 1962.

At the same time, changes in hospital design has meant removing steam-pressure sterilisers from each ward (no sterilising of bowls or bedpans); replacement of sterilising bedpans with "sanitisers", which don't kill 100% of bugs; pushing beds closer together (no longer are they 10 feet apart to minimise droplet infection); replacement of metal bowls or heavy duty plastic ones, which could be sterilised, with cheap plastic ones that peel off layers because they can't take the heat in the sanitiser (assuming they can fit in); and sinks designed so that you can't actually scrub your hands properly without contaminating them again when you try to rinse off or turn off the tap.

These are all basic infection control measures which stood the test of time for over a century but were gradually removed from about 1960-onwards because "antibiotics will take care of it". Arguments for keeping them were lost in the bid to save money or because the idiots approving the designs of the new hospitals have never "walked the walk".

(Yes, I was a nurse. And these are pet peeves. I worked in the "pus pit" a.k.a. the Staph Unit of the Royal Melbourne Hospital back in the early 1980's. I was also on the staff of an infectious diseases hospital for a time. )

  • Talking about nurses does anyone remember the SEN's or greenies as they were known.........We need them back! Nurses need a degree now why? Only Doctors went to Uni in my day, nurses were trained in the hospitals and were much better at their jobs.
Ward sisters were terrifying and responsible for their own ward, so if they were not cleaned properly or a patient complained about no one answering the bell - all hell let loose!

  • Glory hole. Anyone can maker anything innocuous, rude, nowadays.

I certainly think people can look back to the past with rose tinted glasses. Life was tough in the 50's. My gran had her children in the 50's. 3 died in childbirth. Wouldn't have happened nowadays.
Money was extremely tight. Yes, nowadays it's the otherway with everyone wanting expensive gadgets, but back then even basics were expensive to come by.

I was born in 1974. My mother never bought shop bought cake. I remember living in houses with no central heating & no wall to wall carpets.

I am very glad for central heating & have never understood the fashion for wooden flooring!
