Fidelity Pension Fund choices

My Company’s Pension scheme is currently provided by Fidelity International. When they transferred their provision across we were given the option of either choosing one of their default investment options or going down the Self-Select route. At the time I choose the latter and I’m investing in funds via their Working Life Strategy which adjusts it’s approach depending on how long left you have until retirement. As I’m only 35 I have a few years left to go and therefore I can afford to be a bit more adventurous in my fund selection if need be. My pension contributions are currently split between the following funds:

Fund Allocation
Fidelity Newton Global Balanced Fund Cla 56.08
Fidelity UK Index Pensions Fund 18.05
Fid Newton Real Return Fund Class 6 13.91
Fidelity International Equity Fund Cls 5 11.96

By going down this route I have always had a nagging doubt that the investments will just plod along and the portfolio will never be altered to reflect the funds performance. Are Fidelity really looking after my best interests? I’m therefore considering looking at going down the self select route. Having checked the performance of each fund it appears that the Newton Real Return and then Newton Global Balanced fund are performing well whilst both of Fidelity’s own funds appear to be lagging. This only goes to reinforce my fears. If I go down the Self Select route I can choose from any of the following funds:

I’m considering swapping the two Fidelity Funds so that my UK equity exposure sits with Aberdeen UK Growth Fund Class and my Global with either the Aberdeen Global Growth fund or the Mellon Long Term Global Equity fund. In doing this, whilst aiming to retain roughly the same level of risk if need be I’m happy to be slightly more adventurous in view of the length of time I’m due to retire. I’m struggling to be able to find details on Morningstar or Trustnet for comparison purposes so before I make this changes I was hoping someone could critique my thoughts? Are the alternative funds I’m looking at more stellar? Are there others in the above list I should be looking at?

Thanks.

Your current funds are pretty cautious and not really appropriate for your age unless you are cautious yourself. What sort of drop in value would you be willing to accept in a bad year? About 40% is where the UK FTSE 100 index and most developed world stock markets sit and is the sort of level to accept for best growth.

For global investing a basic fund is something like Fid BlackRock World (ex-UK) Equity Fd C1.

Fidelity Invesco High Income Fund Cls4 is a UK fund that has a manager with an excellent reputation.

Thanks for taking the time to reply jamesd. In view of the length of time I've got to my retirement I am happy to be more adventurous in my investments and appreciate along the way it will be a rollercoaster with the ups and downs. I think I'm going to go down the self select route so I can rebalance the portfolio so it's focused more on growth.

This isn't a recommendation, just a copy + paste of what I have as my Fidelity Pension. I'm 31 and three quarters :)

It's difficult to find good funds from the Fidelity offerings to cover everything I wanted in my portfolio (indeed, property and infrastructure cover, come from my old Standard Life pension). Out of the ones on offer, I think (hope) these aren't dogs:
Fid Baillie Gifford UK Eqty Focus Cls 8 - 9%
Fid BlackRock Corp Bond Fd All Stocks C8 - 10%
    Fid BlackRock World (ex-UK) Equity Fd C8 - 8%
Fid Global Focus Pensions Fund Cl4 - 8%
Fidelity Emerging Markets Equity - 15%
Fidelity European (ex UK) Equity Fd Cls8 - 9%
Fidelity Newton Global Balanced Fd Cls 8 - 19%
Fidelity North American Equity Fund Cls8 - 8%
Fidelity Pacific Equity Fund Class 8 - 5%
    Fidelity Special Situations Pensions C4 - 9%

It's difficult to research them as some of them are re-packaged funds under a different name. For example the Fidelity Pacific Equity Fund is actually the Fidelity South East Asia fund (which in my opinion is a good fund).
