Freezing cheese

...or to be more exact - Cheesestrings :)

My local '"Approved Foods"-type store has 168g packs of 8 individually wrapped top branded Cheesestrings for 50p per pack (Mr S price = £2.70 ) Sell by date 01/03/2012

I have bought 6 packs as it seems to be a good deal - 6 x 168g = 1008g - 1kg cheddar cheese for £3 :) and I will used them during the next week or so.

Not a thing I normally buy as they are vey expensive in the supermarkets but I figure that these are too good a deal to miss especially as I'm still on my special diet and having one 20g portion stick keeps me from hacking off a generous piece from a block of cheese!

I'm thinking about going back for more packs but they would only be a bargain if they would "keep" for another 2-3 weeks in the fridge ...or if they were freezeable.

I'm on a very tight budget so would appreciate your opinions on this. :)

Cheese freezes no problem. Should also keep 2-3 weeks in the fridge

Love your reason for editing: gramer (spelt wrong). Sorry I normally ignore spelling errors but I thought that was quite funny

Thanks for the help - I can stock up with confidence now :)

Whoops! - we have typo's, not gramar or gramer - its grammar! I blame the dodgy keyboard on my ancient laptop, really have to strike each key quite firmly or it misses! Very annoying :D

  • Just a thought but when your supply of cheep strings runs out could you make and freeze your own? Well more cheese fingers, cut up a block of cheese wrap in cling film etc and freeze.
I have frozen lots of cheese normally brie/camembert types but I have frozen most cheeses including cottage cheese without too many issues.
    Put the kettle on. ;)

don't know how easy it would be to make your own, maybe you haven't really eaten any but they make them by sort of cooking the cheese to get the correct stringy texture.

op, tbh i bet they would be fine just in the fridge - i think they would last quite a long time after their sell by date

I've found that an unopened/sealed slab of cheese can stay mould free in the fridge for around 3 months.

But I don't know about 'cheese strings' - I know their make up is a bit different than normal hard cheese.
You may need to check the ingredients. There maybe something in them that makes them prone to chewy/rubberiness as time goes by. :(

:) I love cheese, any strength, colour or texture :)

To be honest - it was the price of £3 per kilo that was the big selling point for me :)

Just cos I remembered - you can keep cheese for months in the fridge if you sprinkle a tea towel with vinegar and wrap the cheese in it, then wrap in newspaper to stop whole fridge smelling!!!

I buy a large block of cheese (especially when on the offer and always divide it up into four quarters and freeze three individually and they freeze beautifully.I also have frozen brie, and the garlic roll type of cheese as well (usually when its reduced after Christmas0 this also freezes well.I love cheese, and its my downfall when I try to lose weight:) but a little of what you fancy won't hurt too much .I'm not sure about the cheese strings though I know I would have bought them anyway at that price as my youngest DGS love them in their packed lunch boxes( they take two sometimes to school with them)so I think you did well and got a bargain
