What annoys me is that sometimes when the staff are marking down the items on the trolly, if you so much as go near them and ask if they are reducing them further, they stop and walk off in a huff taking the pricing gun with them and disappear through the doors into the store room . It's as though staff don't want you to buy things reduced or perhaps they want the cheap stuff themselves. It always makes me wary to go near the reduced sections when a member of staff is sorting everything out!!!

Looks like the staff members who reduce stuff to virtually nothing were out in local waitrose tonight, got 8 loaves of bread for a grand total of 99p! :D Not only that but the date on the tag of all of them is the 7th, not even today! I kept two out and stuck 4 in the freezer, I even gave 2 to OHs friend. Other days the tight-wad staff are about, they only knock 15p off a loaf or something ridiculous even if the date is that day.

Sainsbury's throwing it away? I thought you meant their reputation. Newish store opened near me, very happy, until I visited. Loads of items not priced, or some with 2 different prices, full of tat, reminded me of Tesco before Tesco went really !!!!. I used to love the quality at Sainsbury's (before I moved), all gone.. So yes, sainsbury's....throwing it away.

Sainsbury's have had big problems with having the right stock and restocking empty shelves for years, my local one didn't have the fairy 650ml for nearly two months-and just left the empty box for it on the shelf, also my local sainsbury's are a decent size but don't seem to sell any dried herbs/spices/condiments at all, only have one or two types of tea, 2 or 3 varieties of squash and a miserable frozen section with half the freezers out of order all the time. Local Waitrose is exactly the same size and sells Waitrose's entire product range, have never found an item on my supermarket's waitrose bit that they don't have in the store, was there the other week and the manager and one of the other staff were going round really upset because they didn't have as much stock as they would have liked of some of the things they had offers on, manager said to staff member make sure in two days time these things are fully restocked-this is not good enough. You'd never see that in Mr S xx

The local Sainsbury Store has now miraculously started wheeling the reduced dry goods to the front of the store near the checkouts to make sure people see the stuff for sale :T

I wonder how that happened? ;)

Well, I know exactly.. as I had an email from head office saying they'd forwarded my findings/concerns onto the store manager for action. I've not been in past 9pm yet so I can't say if the bin-bagging has been put back to closing time yet.

So... my faith in Sainsbury is being restored on that front, I'm glad they've taken some action that helps both them and the shoppers. Minimising waste and maximising sales, must be a good thing.

Shame about the sudden store wide price hikes though...
(e.g £2.00 regular priced ( non offer ) for a dozen eggs last week, and now £2.50 this week!) Milk and bread seem to be steady though.
 single forever, not looking. Don't drink, don't smoke. Oh what a Happy Bunny !!!
  • Write in such a case to the supermarket company and complain! Same with Waitrose as they just reduce things only by 10%.
Given the fact that some people on this planet have not sufficient access to food, all those supermarkets should be ashamed and punished.

Check out youtube for documentations on food waste and what rules are in place, e.g. sizes of potatoes.... It is so sad.

    I very rarely shop there.......
when I first started there 8 months ago i too was shocked at how much food is wasted and thrown away. I've been told the bread is given to animals but thats it. only instore baker items like bagels & cakes are reduced never bread and Even staff don't get a look in as they don't do staff reductions anymore as it's not company policy. plants and flowers do not get reduced they just get thrown out!
We only reduce once a day unless there is an abundance of stuff which is then reduced again to less than half price.
Sainsbury's are only worried about profit and money saving and as for their "you can live well for less slogan" what a load of tosh just like the feed a family of 4 for a fiver. How many people have tried to do that with the same products a few months later??
they had a pasta meal using basics pasta which was 9p a bag, thats now 39p a bag!!!
I shop where i can get more for my money and the products are just as good or better, there are some things i won't buy that r basics and other stuff i will, but sainsburys are still a lot dearer even with my 10% staff discount.
My daughter works at waitrose and they get some great bargains, I got an £80 turkey for £12 at xmas but they always have a little section for staff with reduced items that are either damaged or going out of date but there will always be the same stuff on the shelves reduced for shoppers too. they also reduce their cakes and breads etc. M&S reduce well too.

The plants are reduced. Bought an orchid that lasted me for 4 months for £1 (was £10)
they always have a little section for staff with reduced items that are either damaged or going out of date .

We do have these sections in the back. For example, if a multipack of 6 Mullerlight yoghurt's wrapper gets split, it is placed in a fruit and veg bag and priced for 60p!

Other things we get are the gap between display until and use by dates of eggs are 5-7 days apart. I often get eggs bought a day after the DU. Last box were 6 organic eggs for 45p - normally £2.29. Plus eggs from my experience last a fortnight after the UB date anyway

We feed our cows with the baked goods that no body buys. (some time the dog sneaks inthe shed and has an absolute field day too.

I have this mental pic of a Friesian called Daisy licking icing off a cupcake now ..:rotfl:

Glad I don't buy eggs at Sainsbos, sheesh ! I get through a dozen a week. Eggs have all eight amino acids :)
