I need to see a chiropodist, never been before. I am over 70 and have diabetes. I have heard that i can get treatment free. Is this true, and how would i apply.

My husband is in his 40s and he's been having free podiatry care for years, either at the local hospital or health centre, he goes to the "high risk" clinic because he's a diabetic and something as simple as an ingrowing toenail or cutting yourself while trimming nails can end up with you losing a leg!

Get in touch with your GP surgery they should refer you to your nearest clinic.

As a diabetic you should have been seeing a chiropodist not least because foot health is very important. Your GP will be able to organise this or ask at your next appointment with your diabetes specialist/nurse. If you've been cutting your own toe-nails be very, very careful.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Yes you can receive free foot care because you are diabetic but it doesn't mean you will. Each department has different protocols and criteria and you may only be seen once and discharged, it all depends on your personal situation.

Get a referral from your GP and go see them, it's the only way to find out.
