Tesco ate my Card

Hey guys,

just had my HSBC debit card eaten by a tesco bank machine, i cancelled it within 30mins, should i be worried?

im a student and it's left me worried since i can't get money out for 5 days (until they send my card to my branch), so should i get a credit card?

I'm in a good financial situation, but i wouldn't know what to look for, so any advice would be useful......!

  • Hi, I would most definitely NOT get a credit card for the purposes of withdrawing cash. The APRs are extremely high (about 30%+) and you are usually charged this interest from the moment the cash is withdrawn, rather than after your statement, and so it's VERY expensive. Besides, it'll take you far longer than 5 days to apply, be accepted, and then furnished with a credit card.

Did you report it to the Tesco branch or your bank? Perhaps they can help. Do you have a good friend you could borrow £10 or £20 from until your new card arrives? Or perhaps dip into an ISA?

As they say, never leave all your eggs in one basket. Do you have money anywhere else that you can access?

    Best of luck. :)
  • Hi,

if you have a branch of HSBC near you you should be able to get money over the counter, bit old fashioned I know, they may ask you some security questions, but they will be answers that only you should know.

Option 2: ask your friendly landlord to 'put it on the slate'. :rotfl:
  • all cards that are 'eaten' by any bank machine other than the issuing banks one will automatically be destroyed for security reasons. get cash over the counter rather than a CC.

Just pop into HSBC with your account number and ID (such as a passport or driving license) and they'll let you withdraw the cash over the counter.

By the time you apply for and get a credit card your new bank card will be with you, so not a lot of point really.

In the meantime go into the bank to withdraw money
