Hi guys, Im in the process of changing accounts from TSB to RBS but Im contacting companies myself to tell them my new account details and havent spoken to a few yet.

3 of those were due out tomoro, as wages are now being paid into new RBS account I had to go to TSB atm tonight to pay in money to cover the 3 payments due out tomoro....buuuut the atm at my branch REFUSED to TAKE MY MONEY. Looks like they have wind of whats going on....

I came home and logged on to TSB online, it still looks like its normal...I still have like 3 quid in my account...I thought it'd say I had nothing available.

So Im obv going to phone the 3 companies and make payments by phone tomoro instead....but my question is...

Do I cancel direct debit instructions online tonight (while I still have working online banking) does it matter whether I do or not? As I dont have money in my account to cover payments now will the companies levy charges? or not because I'll pay tomoro anyway? Or will the bank charge me for bounced direct debits?

To cancel/not to cancel/ or no matter either way??

Sorry for waffling, I hope you understood what I'm trying to say, thanks guys x

  • i dont understand why they would refuse to take your money to be honest, but yes if the dds bounce tomorrow, you will get charges. Some banks (i think LLOYds) allow till about half 3 in the afternoon to get money in to cover anything coming out that day x

    I can try to help.

The machine would not accept a deposit because there is a problem with the machine and not your account. I use Halifax deposit machines (outside), but often they take until noon the following day to check and deposit the funds. So maybe this was not so helpful?

You need to first look at what account you have and then what charges are applied. Since so many accounts are different now, unless you tell me what account you have I cannot advise if you will be charged for failed direct debits.

The person you are trying to pay CAN charge for missed direct debits as well. You need to again confirm who you are paying, for example credit cards do, but Council Tax will NOT.

I hope this helps some what, but you do need to provide much more detail.

I think if you cancel the direct debit instruction in time, the bank will not charge, I also think the person you are paying cannot charge. But I don't know if it is now too late. If you know it's not going through, maybe worth a try?
  • I think they are maybe going to close my account down, as my overdrafts have been included in my DAS which hasnt quite started yet, but the bank have been contacted about it.
The screen read something like 'your bank has refused this transaction'...forget exactly now cos I was so shocked.

So if I cancel direct debits online the bank cant charge me then as they havent bounced anything? And the companies wont charge me because I'll call them and pay over the phone? would that be right?

  • Thanks, it was first a TSB machine outside my branch, it gave me a deposit envelope but wouldnt take it back in, and wouldnt show me my balance.
I went to another atm (not tsb) and thats where I got the message saying my bank wouldnt take the transaction...

My payments tomoro are tv licence, scottish widows and Admiral insurance.

  • Yes in my opinion, but they do need to be cancelled, now there is the matter of will they be cancelled in time?

The only problem you may have is late payment charges on the accounts due, as debit card may take 3 days, the direct debit would have showed instantly (although I am not sure they do get it that quick in theory).

Do you have anything to loose by trying what you have said? If not, try and then you know you have done your best.

Last thing, I use Halifax and they no longer charge returned direct debits, if they are paid they charge unauthorised overdraft fees only. HTH
  • Problem with machine, regarding the envelope (same with me last week), but even if it worked it wont be in for the morning, would be late afternoon once checked.

    TV can't charge you :-)
    Widows - whats that for?
Insurance - maybe a charge, but you will have to call and ask nicely

  • Life assurance should also be fine, I stop paying when I find a new deal and they send me letters saying please provide your new direct debit details, few letters later they leave me alone. They obviously cancel the policy though, unless you pay up with the missed payments.

As you are with the same bank as me in theory, you should be okay to cancel the dd and then speak to the companies to make good the payments due.

Just hope they cancel okay for you now.

As you have said they will fail anyway, so nothing to loose :-)
