Credit Record

I recently checked my credit record & noticed that details of a personal loan with First Direct that was paid on time every month for 4 years do not show up. The last payment was made over a year ago but I was surprised to see no mention of the loan on my file. I spoke to FD & they said they didn't have my permission to give this information to the credit people - bizarre I know - & even if i gave my consent now they couldn't do it as it's in the past.

Any thoughts or suggestions or similar experiences to share?

Sometimes on older accounts banks did not obtain permission to share your information with the credit reference agencies, particularly on current accounts this can be the case.

For a loan from only 5 years ago though that does seem pretty unusual though. Had you not spoken to FD I'd have said its most likely that its on your credit file with one of the other 2 credit reference agencies (assuming you've checked just one).
But if they've told you they didn't have your permission to share with any of the credit reference agencies then obviously they cannot.
