Go on one of the car buying sites-webuyanycar etc and get a valuation from them. You are given the opinion to record any faults/defects so make sure you report all dints, knocks scratchs plus anything not working 100%/mechanical defects should easily be able to get a value below £1k

doesent really help since the OR does their own valuation and takes into account that sites like that offer very low valuations

Webuyanycar et all won't be an acceptable source of a valuation as they purposefully value low. Either parkers or getting valuations from autotrader etc would be the best bet.

This highlights the disparity between different OR offices and how they approach the issue.

I had my OR interview in January. My car has a Parkers guide price only £300 lower than yours AND is currently declared off-road AND my wife has her own car. The interviewer just took it as "required for business" without a second thought and I got the letter confirming this a week later.

Perhaps try it from the point of view that you absolutely 100% need it to be able to run your business (your income) and that being forced into a cheaper vehicle may adversely affect the impression you give to your clients.

I would ask about it at your telephone interview next week. I would also write down a list of your reasons for keeping that particular car over getting 1k to buy a new car. Keep them brief and to the point (I know I waffle when I get nervous) it certainly won't do any harm. Just my tuppence worth though

Yup, get a sheet prepared with all your reasons. We had an A4 side full! Never had to use it, go figure.

I agree with what others have posted you need to fight this so that you at least you have done everything you can. Even if they are saying we need x amount I have seen threads on here where that figure has changed to a lower figure when the person has pushed back...

In your case I struggle to see how it couldn't be classed as needed for business. If they don't budge then a cheaper car is going to have an impact on your SOA as you would expect higher servicing costs...

I believe that some of your arguments do not stack up.

Firstly it is not how many miles a car has done, it is how it is driven and wear. I would take a car with higher mileage which did a lot of motorway driving than one that had averaged less than 10,000 a year by being driven around towns and cities over short distances.

If you need the car for work it is irrelevant that your children cannot fit in unless you employ them as well.

Higher mileage would not always mean higher maintenance costs, my P reg Mondeo We got 3 years ago has cost a set of tyres and a set of wipers. The brakes got renewed as well, and some minor servicing. All these costs would come with any older car. By the way the car cost £250.

I believe that you really need to look at yourself, you want to go br but are trying not to sacrifice the car. More for status than anything because neighbours etc do not have to know about your br, but down grading your car may cause some to ask questions.

You better get used to it though as over time a lot of people will find out or you will have to tell, so sometimes it is easier to get it out early and it is dealt with and everybody then gets on with their lives.

You never know some body you tell might have or know someone with a reasonable car they want to get rid of, that is how we got ours.
