Cheap Large amounts of Icing sugar

367 Posts
I got lots of stuff to start making cupcakes. I have a few good Wilton tips and plan on mostly sticking to just butter cream frosting. Each recipe uses 500grams of Icing sugar for frosting! Now asda isn't too expensive, but is there a place I can buy like 5Kg bags of it relatively cheap? Macro seemed quite expensive.
I'm also guessing that 00 flour would be best for cupcakes? Any where to buy large bags of that too? With the easter holidays comming up soon the kids have got two weeks off school! So we should be making a HUGE amount of cupcakes
A batch a day keeps the doctor away?

I find with cupcake recipes they often use far too much frosting, much more than I normally use, I made cupcakes from the Hummingbird Bakery recipe book and followed the ingredients exactly, it made about double the amount of frosting than I needed! Now I only make half the quantity.
They are doing 10 x 1kg packs of sliverspoon icing sugar for just over £15 (£1.54 a Kg) plus postage (which starts at £3.30, but is £5.50 for just this) = £20.86
Tesco & Asda = £1.89 per Kg x 10 = £18.90 if you go n collect
It all comes down to how much you are buying and if you can collect.
Economy; careful management; providence. Whether you call it thrifty or frugality it all comes down to getting more for your money.
My intention is to end up with something looking like this
Only with red tips for the rose cupcakes and purple tips for the violet ones. I'm really excited about this project, I need to boast my confidence a little. Been a stay at home mum for 3 years now and I'm feeling kind of useless

therefore
500g x 20 = 10Kg
so
88p x 20 = £17.60
So Aldi is cheaper, but again do you have one near and the ability to cart home 20 boxes of icing sugar!:rotfl:
