Ex-tenant debts

Hi all, just a quick question to ease my paranoia. My ex-flatmate left the country in November last year, and I believe she had quite a bit of debt. Since she went there have been letters arriving for her every 3-4 days, seemingly from the same people. I have passed these along to the landlord, assuming he would return them to sender. However, I am a little concerned as to what happens if these debts get passed to a debt collector / bailiff? I park my car on the driveway and often leave some stuff in the shared space in the flat, but presumably they can't take my things? Or is there something I should be doing to protect myself just in case?

do the return to sender mail yourself. If your car is registered to you then dont worry about it.
The landlord presumably knows that this person has left.
Get a letter from the landlord to clarify who lives in the flat and show it to anyone who calls.
They cannot take any goods from anyone till a CCJ is awarded and then they cant take it from you because your 'mate' doesnt live there.
So stop worrying.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
If she has gone abroad a court in this country doesn't have any jurisdiction over her, These people are a nuisance but will go away if you ignore them, no one can touch you for someone else's debts just because you lived at the same address.
The letters are probably already from debt collectors. You need to be clear that a "debt collector" is a private citizen or company who has no more authority or powers than any other private citizen or company. They are, however, full of bullsh*t and try to make out they have. Let them waste their postage, parasites that they are! As McKneff said the only way a bailiff could be involved is if a court judgment is obtained and that is HIGHLY unlikely. You would simply tell the bailiff that the party had gone abroad and that should be the end of the matter.

Hi
The only debt you need to worry about is Council Tax. If she did not pay her portion, they can and will come after you. Check with the Council. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
