how to make 18th birthday special

When a 17 year old doesn't have any ideas what they want or what they'd like to do for their 18th, how can you make it special for them?
Anyone here had a great 18th birthday they'd like to share?

  • My mum took me to Paris for my 18th and it was a complete surprise!! :T
We had a wonderful time swanning around pretending we were much better to do than we really are! We took in all the usual sites, had some lovely meals and bought back some great shopping. We went by coach and did it on quite a tight budget but obviously it was still a pricey weekend!

If you can't or don't want to stretch to something like that how about a themed party? Is there anything they have a particular interest in? Or a place they'd like to visit. You could go all out with decorating your house, have themed food, appropriate music, even a dressing up box for some funny photos if suitable. Get all the family and friends round and I'm sure you'd have a great time.

Obviously depends on tehor interests! I like that idea of going away for the weekend - my ex and i did Paris too! We managed to win free return Euostar tickets (can't remeber how!) hence the trip. With the hotel booking, we got a Paris guide book and a five day metro pass which reallt helped.

We also managed cheap weekends in the uk - memorable York and Edinburgh. York, I won restaurant vouchers through a raffle at the work, managed cheap rail tickets etc.

In Edinburgh, we travelled there by Megabus, stayed at the George hotel with a deal with work discount scheme and used vouchers where we could. Doing this, it meant we could treat ourselves to touristy things that we couldn't affoprd when I was a student there.

Parties at home could be adapted to their interests. My husband had his 40th recently - he had a day with his gaming pals and I made sure food was available, drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic and made a fuss of designated driver for the day!). Also got him 40 presents for his 40th - which he loved!!!!! These were tailored to his interests.

If you've got time, and they are a fan of something - football team, celebrity, whatever - you can sometimes post stuff to them for them to sign and they'll send it back. Perhaps a good momento of their 18th that they can keep. Works particularly well if the team isn't a massive one (e.g you'll probably get more luck if you sent a football shirt to Luton town then Manchester United, lol).

As for the day, my sister and I both had parties, my brother just wanted a family meal out. We have a cake maker cousin who made us all a cake that reflected us. I remember the little touches.

If they're sporty, maybe take him/her to a crash course in snow-boarding or kite-surfing or rock climbing, or whatever they might be into but haven't tried before.

    Hope that helps!
